- Strictly speaking, even MP3 is proprietary (the algorithms are owned and patented by Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft).
- Furthermore, it can play midi files that WMP trips over (thinks they are mis-formatted).

It works for me. I can only assume that this was working yesterday when my files played fine. If you can't install these codecs, tring to convert MP4 to WMP natively supported WMV or AVI format is the best choise. I think the problem might have been that I set up I-Tunes before setting up WMP.
