Thank you for helping us maintain CNET's great community. So I opened up the enclosure, disconnected the hard drive and placed it in an external hard drive reader and that's how I got the results in the original post. I put a new WD3200JB HDD into the Maxtor OneTouch case (minus the dead HDD), hooked it all up and connected it to my PC. But the XP Disk Management program doesn't see a new WD with 320 GB -- it shows a 128 GB (unallocated) Maxtor OneTouch. Installing drivers do provide an utility to configure the automatic power-off feature, plus with Maxtor's drivers, the external drive shuts down when computer is shut down. I shrink my partition and then the unallocated partition is missing.. If yes then it's a known issue now. I like the default drivers better than the ones from Maxtor, because that way it doesn't shut down + power up the drive on a system reboot. With default drivers the drive stays on (until idle counter reaches the configured value and shuts the external down). Apparently it re-enabled SetMax before trying to use it... I just talked to data recovery people yesterday and they said it's just so when you put another manufacturer's drive into OneTouch II, then it will be automatically set to maximum it shows me pretty much the same results. My WD3200 was spared by 1st gen, but my 7K250 wasn't: it was clipped into 128GiB. Can't find your answer ?
HDD unallocated solved Data recovery - WMC tool overwrote partition and made unallocated partition. But even then, don't blame me if you lose capacity and possibly data as well. Not with this new install. Sounds quite Fishy.
I can't guarantee OneTouches that have only USB2 will work, nor can I say that the ones with just FireWire will fail. check my blog Thanks for any advice. It shows up in Windows 7 Computer Management -> Storage as Disk 1, Not Initialized and Unallocated.
The 128GB is something weird though. If not, then I'm sorry. It is not related to this WD3200 model, not even to WD drives, as they said it was happened with all other companies (except Maxtor) drives put into OneTouch II. Is it something with the drivers? That's all I know now, I have no more ideas. have a peek at these guys If the max addressable space was reduced into 28-bit, maybe MHDD could fix it (re-enable SetMax and use SetMax to restore it), if WDs own utility couldn't?

I unfortunately had the drive plugged in as I was installing and formatting my main hard drive.
