I then tried the cmd "bootrec.exe /FixMbr" but got the message "The drive cannot find the sector requested." I'm assuming that that's because my hdd isn't being recognised.

I've never updated the BIOS on a Biostar motherboard before, so I can't really say if it's safe or not - despite the warning on the their Download -> BIOS section. But then I installed a debian linux on (hd0,0) with a swap partition on (hd0,1) and obviously, I had to format both partitions in linux format (ext3 and swap). Once the drive is connected, open Windows Explorer, find the drive letter of the newly connected drive, and write it down, as you’ll need it in just a bit.
